Description

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is considered a small type of dog who is moderately active. They are very affectionate, graceful and gentle dogs who would be a great addition to a small family with children. A Cavalier’s head should be proportionate to its body. The eyes are large, round and set well apart, mostly dark brown in colour. You can recognize this gorgeous dog by its very long ears that will fan forward towards its face. A Cavalier’s bite is a regular scissor bite, meaning that the top teeth are overlapping the bottom teeth slightly. The tail should be medium length and nice and fluffy.

The litter size is relatively small and that is because it is a small dog. It could range from 2-6 puppies.

Origin

The toy spaniel has been a part of court life in Europe as early as the 15^th century. They were and are still considered “comforter spaniels” because they love to be on their owners lap! These spaniels were immortalized in famous art masterpieces and this is how the modern breed came to exist. In 1925, an American by the name of Roswell Eldridge was fascinated by the old artworks of the old Cavalier and offered a £25 prize at the UK Crufts Dog Show for the winner of the Cavalier classes. It took a few years for them to get winners that were similar to those in the art works but they did it and in 1928 the UK Cavalier King Charles Spaniel club was founded.

Look

Colours: The Cavalier can come in four different colours: Blenheim (chestnut and white), Tricolor (black, white and tan), Ruby (solid red) and Black and Tan.

Coat: The coat of a Cavalier is of moderate length, silky and should not consist of curls. The length of the hair on the ears, chest, legs and tail should be a bit longer to give the Cavalier its signature look. CKC Spaniels’ shedding is listed as moderate to high. You will get hair on your floor, furniture, clothes and bed if you let them share it. They need brushing daily ideally or every second day minimum. Cavalier Spaniels will shed a bit in the spring and fall, so you may find it helpful to groom daily at that time.

Health

There are few health problems that may arise with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Before you decide to buy a spaniel, you should consider the following risk factors that may arise with your NEW DOGGY and remember that this specific breed may require more health monitoring:

1. Juvenile Cataracts
2. Cardiac mitral valve disease (MVD)

Learning

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a very smart and loyal companion. With some time and attention he or she can be trained in no time! Crate training is essential for training this breed. At first with any dog it will be a little difficult but with time they will learn to love their crate and it will become their sanctuary. It will keep them safe and is a wonderful place for them when you need to run out of the house.

Temperament

A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a very loving and sweet animal that is extremely loyal to its family. You can expect this wonderful animal to be a great addition to your family and you will not be disappointed! They will show you unconditional love and be an amazing companion.

Living with

Living conditions– The Cavalier is a small dog and can live in an apartment or a house. The breed is pretty active so if you live in an apartment, make sure that you take him/her outside on regular bases for some exercise. This dog is not acclimated to extreme heat or cold climates but that does not mean if you live in areas that experience this weather that you cannot own one. You just need to take the necessary precautions in preventing any problems that could arise such as heat exhaustion.

Exercise– As with any dogs, Cavaliers should be taken on daily walks. These walks help with anxiety of the animal, while allowing it to get the necessary exercise it needs. They are a quite active dog so he or she would love some time outside playing with the family! Just make sure to always have fresh water available on those hot days.
