German Shepherd
The German Shepherd, also called the Alsatian, is a gorgeous, intelligent, active breed. They are typically black and tan (though white and black dogs also exist), and may be long or short haired. Popular with the military and police for their intelligence and trainability, the German Shepherd will wow you with their physical and mental abilities. Obedience classes are very useful for German shepherds, teaching them good manners and social skills. They are most comfortable living in larger homes, with someone who will give them plenty of exercise. They can get on well with children and could be a great choice for a family pet – especially if you want to encourage your kids to spend more time outdoors!

About German Shepherd breed
Description
When you first glance at a German Shepherd you will notice a strong, well-muscled animal that is alert and full of life and energy. The head should look noble and strong with coarseness while being in proportion with the body. German Shepherds have this keen expression while looking both intelligent and composed which they are. They were bred with the purpose of work and herding, which gives them all that alertness and energy. The eyes are of medium size and almond shaped, while the colour should be as dark as possible. The ears should be pointed moderately and proportionate to the skull while opening towards the front. Their muzzle should be long and strong in nature while their nose should be black in colour. The jaws should also be strong in nature. German Shepherd tails are absolutely gorgeous. They should be very bushy and long and while at rest the tail should curve and form the shape of a sabre sword.
The litter size of German Shepherds can range anywhere between 6-10 puppies per litter.
Origin
In 1889 Captain Max von Stephanitz (father of the breed) started the process to standardize the breed of German Shepherds. There was a dog show in Karlsruhe, Germany where a specific dog caught the eye of the Captain. It was a medium-sized yellow and gray wolf like dog by the name of Hektor Linksrhein and the Captain had to have him! So he bought the dog, renamed him Horand von Grafrath and registered him to become the first German Shepherd.
Look
German Shepherds can vary in colours but strong rich colours are the most desired. Black and black saddle with tan, all black all grey, bi-colours: predominantly black or may have tan or gold marking on its head.
A German Shepherd will have a double coat which consists of an outer and inner coat while medium in length. The outer coat will be very dense with straight hair. There should also be a very thick undercoat. The coat will also be weather-resistant being that it was originally bred to be a herd or work dog.
